Seattle Bamboo Species

1. Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' Common name: Golden vivax Maximum Height: 70 feet Typical height in USA: 40 to 50 feet Diameter: 3 to 5 inch canes Hardiness: -5° F USDA Zone recommended 6 through 10. Like other large bamboos, Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' will appreciate the sunniest location possible. Mature height will be 40 to 50 ft. (possibly much taller) with an expected culm diameter of 3" to 5".

This is an amazing species, we have 3-4 15-20 gallon pots with teenagers thriving. Lots of new shoots, dark green leaves, multiple culms in each pot. Many pots can be divided right now, and this is a bamboo that costs more to begin with, but we will buy back any future divisions. Or we will trade plants for maintaining your grove in the best way.

2. Phyllostachys vivax is one of the largest growing species of hardy bamboo. The culms can reach heights of 70' and a diameter of 5". Vivax is similar to Japanese Timber in many ways, however the culm walls tend to be slightly thinner. The culms will reach a very large size in a short amount of time. It is cold hardy to -5 degrees Fahrenheit, more than any other large timber variety. It is sought after for its rapid growth and viability in colder temperatures.

We have 20-25 gallon pots some with multiple culms, some with single culms. Our specimens are 20-30' tall right now and, as of 15 April 2010, we have new shoots just starting to poke through the ground (or the side of the nursery pot).
